  • 03/16/2020 - Dear PA Cyber families, Last Friday, March 13th, Governor Wolf closed “all” Pennsylvania public schools for two weeks. Since this was a state mandate, PA Cyber complied. From that time, and throughout the weekend, we sought additional information from the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) and our cyber school colleagues to determine what this means for online schools. Both Governor Wolf and Education Secretary Rivera stated that cyber schools could continue to operate if they ensure social distancing and seek permission from the PDE. We received that written permission late Sunday evening. Therefore, I made the decision that PA Cyber will reopen and begin instruction, including live teaching and tutoring, across all modes of instruction on Wednesday, March 18, 2020. I have received dozens of e-mails and calls from PA Cyber students and parents asking why a cyber school is closing, especially as many traditional schools are switching to some version of online classes during their closures. I believe we are obligated to create some sense of normalcy for our students and our families. In addition, we can continue to provide the many support services you have come to expect, including tutoring, the student assistance program, and counseling. We regularly argue that there are advantages to a cyber education; this is one of them. You will be receiving additional information from your academy and teachers in the next few days. Regional offices will remain closed and no FamilyLink activities, field trips, or other social/extracurricular activities will occur during this time. I am also aware that it is likely this two-week school closure may be extended; thus, we will reassess our plans for the remainder of the school year as new information becomes available. Please take care of yourself, your families, your neighbors, and your communities as we work through this unprecedented and challenging time together. Brian Hayden
